An innovative schoolpack designed for the brand «on». Featuring elements such as a loose-leaf compartment and an external pocket for a backlight, my design addresses the question: How can a school backpack best support children, allowing them to be themselves and even better?

My objective was to create a school backpack tailored to the young primary school age group. In doing so, I centered my focus on the kids and their requirements, fashioning a backpack that aligns with the «on» brand in terms of quality, functionality and aesthetics. The brand «on» is renowned for supporting professional athletes with running shoes that deliver peak performance, emphasizing lightness and functionality.

With an innovative shoulder strap, that fits at the hip smoothly to the body of the kids, the weight is distributed well. From the beginning on my goal was to understand how the children act and to design a school bag that supports the children in being who they are. No child fastens the waist belt, loose sheets become crumpled and they don't like to use a light at the bicycle in the winter when it becomes dark early.

Model: Benjamin, 8 years old

Kids love to ride their bicycles to school, but they need a solution for backlighting during the dark winter evenings. The school pack is designed with a translucent outside pocket.

The volume needed varies each day, depending on sports clothes, lunchboxes, etc. The backpack adjusts to this with variable volume on the side and a roll-top made of lightweight fabric in accent colors.

The weight of the backpack impacts the shoulders and hips. These parts are soft and padded with breathable 3D mesh fabric, while the back of the backpack is stiffened.

The body heights, and especially the lengths of the backs, of the children vary greatly. The length of the back part is adjustable with an easy, fast-changeable system. The different lengths are marked for a precise fit.

Kids in this age group have to carry heavy books and they rarely close the hip belt. So, I invented a smooth, padded, and strong hip-to-shoulder strap that distributes the weight to the hips.

The following details are highlighted:

  1. 1. A fast-click closure
  2. 2. An embedded breast belt
  3. 3. A reflective brand sign on the side for better visibility when crossing a pedestrian crossing

The color system of the shoes can be applied to the color scheme of the school backpack.
